US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has described the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India and said both the Central government at New Delhi and state government in Srinagar have taken significant steps to improve security.
Ambassador Gor is currently on his maiden visit to J&K, where he called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his residence in Srinagar on Wednesday the 19th of August 2026.
The US Ambassador described the meeting with the Omar Abdullah as positive one and said that both sides have identified key follow-ups to be taken forward in the near future.
Soon after the meeting Sergio Gor told waiting media persons that after seeing the improved security conditions firsthand, the United States is most likely to downgrade its travel restrictions for its citizens visiting the J&K.
He added that many US citizens would like to visit Kashmir as it is a very beautiful place.
The Chief Minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah said, the meeting was positive and focused on India-US relations and areas where the United States can engage with state on positive engagements and future collaborations.
