Heavy to very heavy rains are likely to lash large parts of central India.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for next couple of days for Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal and Kerala.
A well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to keep the monsoon active across central India for the next four to five days.
The IMD warning also added that the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into the remaining parts of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, along with parts of Gujarat and the north Arabian Sea over the next four days.
The weather department has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, the Gujarat region, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Odisha and west Madhya Pradesh.
In Maharashtra, relentless rain in Mumbai and neighbouring areas caused waterlogging, traffic congestion and disruptions to local train services. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for schools and colleges after the IMD issued a red alert.
Heavy rainfall affected Punjab, while severe waterlogging was reported in Gujarat’s Junagadh.
In Kerala, rising river and dam levels prompted authorities to issue flood, landslide and sea erosion warnings.
Odisha and West Bengal remain on alert as the Bay of Bengal weather system is expected to intensify further, bringing widespread heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions.
