The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on a stormy note on Monday the 20th of July 2026 as both the Houses saw repeated adjournments while the National Capital witnessed unprecedented youth protests.
Such was the spread of the anger among the youths and their determination to stage a protest at main entrance of the Parliament; around afternoon security forces were forced to shut all the iron entry gates leading up to Lok Sabha as well as the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier when the day began in the Lok Sabha at 11:00 AM, the House paid tributes to six of its former members who passed away recently. They are Nadendla Bhaskara Rao, Omwati Devi, Sudhangshu Seal, Major General Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri (Retired), K. P. Dhanapalan and Pyare Lal Sankhwar.
The House also paid tributes to Father Amir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani played a significant role in fostering India-Qatar relations.
Speaker Birla said, Father Amir of Qatar served as the Amir of Qatar for 18 years and laid the foundation of modern Qatar.
Soon after the obituary reference, when Om Birla tried to take up the Question Hour, the opposition members stood on the feet which included MPs from Congress and Samajwadi Party and raised the issue of paper leak of NEET examination.
Speaker was seen urging the opposition to cooperate in smooth functioning of the House and maintain decorum, but the opposition members continued with their protest, leading to adjournment of the House till 12 noon.
When the House reconvened after the first adjournment at 12 noon, the opposition members continued with their protest forcing the Chair to adjourn the house for half an Hour till 12:30 PM.
When the lower House again assembled after the second adjournment at 12:30 PM, the scene was no different.
The presiding officer Dilip Saikia tried to run the House saying that there should be a healthy debate in the House.
He said, people have sent their MPs to the House of People to raise important issues in the Parliament but the Opposition members did not pay heed to the Chair which led to the second adjournment of the House till 1:00 PM.
When the House again convened at 1:00 PM, the opposition members again pressed their demands and raised slogans.
The Chair again tried in vain to control the heightened tension but the opposition members created ruckus in the House and continued with their protest.
Amid the uproar, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2:00 PM.
When the Lok Sabha House met after the sixth adjournment at 3:00 PM, similar situation prevailed in the House forcing the Chair to finally adjourn the House for the day.
The Rajya Sabha also witnessed multiple adjournments before being finally adjourned for the day.
When the Upper House met after the fifth adjournment at 2:30 PM, Deputy Chairman Harivansh tried to take up the scheduled business, but the opposition members raised slogans and continued with their protest. Amid the ruckus, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till tomorrow.
The House today witnessed six adjournments over the NEET issue.
In the Rajya Sabha the proceedings began at 11:00 AM with the oath of the newly elected Members. Dr Mukeshbhai Rathwa, Mahesh Kewat, Dr Satish Poonia, Prakash Chik Baraik, Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray of BJP, Pawan Khera of Congress, James Sangma of National People’s Party and K. Laltluangkima of Zoram People’s Movement today took oath as Members of the Upper House of Parliament.
