Consider it as a result of climate change or just a matter of co-incidence that too after a gap of 60 years – the monsoon of 2023 has arrived at Delhi and Mumbai on the same day on 25th of June.
The meteorological department said that in Mumbai it has arrived two weeks late on Sunday the 25th of June while in Delhi it is actually two days early.
“It is the first time since June 21, 1961, that the monsoon arrived in Delhi and Mumbai at the same time,” said DS Pai, a senior scientist at the IMD was quoted by the news agency the PTI.
Rainfall data provided by the IMD and widely quoted in the media stated that from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm on June 24, Mumbai witnessed only 28 mm of rainfall. It was between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm that the rainfall intensity picked up, and the city witnessed intense rainfall.
Dr Sushma Nair, scientist, IMD, Mumbai region, was quoted in the online edition of CNBC TV-18, stating that “A cyclonic circulation in the Northeast Arabian Sea, in middle levels was formed and that resulted in this good rain spell. Now, the circulation seems to be getting elongated, but it can still bring in moisture. Mumbai will witness varied rainfall between June 26 and June 29. The city will witness moderate to heavy rainfall during the next four days.”
As per the IMD website, areas like Dahisar, Borivali (E), Goregaon, Bandra, Matunga, GTB, Chandivali, Dadar and parts of Navi Mumbai witnessed more than 120 mm of rainfall on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Safdarjung Observatory – a place from where Delhi’s primary weather station is located logged 48.3 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours up till 8.30 am on Sunday.
Similarly the Dhansa weather station located in the rural Delhi recorded 80 mm, Jafarpur and Lodi Road around 60 mm each, Ayanagar and Mungeshpur around 50 mm each and SPS Mayur Vihar 40 mm, according to the IMD.
