As winter session of Parliament begins from Wednesday the 7th of December 2022, the much delayed Women’s Reservation Bill is back under spotlight with many opposition parties including the JD(U) supporting it.
Its leaders now want it to be passed in both the House in this Winter Session itself.
It may be recalled that the bill to reserve 33 percent seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, was first introduced in the Parliament way back in 1996.
Thereafter many attempts were made by successive governments to re-introduce in both the House. The bill was passed in Rajya Sabha in 2010, but it lapsed after the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha in 2014.
Any bill pending in Lok Sabha lapses with the dissolution of the House. Bills pending in Rajya Sabha are put in the “live register” and remain pending.
On Tuesday, the 6th of December 2022, the Congress demanded that treasury benches hold discussion on various issues, including India-China border situation, price rise, unemployment and alleged misuse of central agencies in the winter session.
Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who attended the all-party meeting of the floor leaders chaired by defence minister Rajath Singh, while talking to reporters, apprised that he had raised various issues and demanded discussion on the same.
“I have raised several issues in the meeting, including India-China border situation, price rise, unemployment, alleged misuse of Central agencies, attack on Kashmiri Pandits and farmers MSP. The government should hold discussion over these issues,” he said.
Chowdhury added,” opposition only wants discussion in the Parliament. I hope the government will give opportunity to the opposition.”
All together 31 parties out of the 47 took part in the meeting.
