A wave of youth-led protests swept across several European countries on Halloween, underscoring growing frustration over soaring living costs, strained public services and what many young people perceive as declining opportunities despite living in some of the world’s most developed economies.

Demonstrations were reported in France, Germany, Portugal and Serbia, reflecting a broader pattern of social unrest that has increasingly drawn students and younger citizens into the political spotlight across the continent.

Authorities remained on high alert following recent incidents of vandalism, looting and clashes linked to anti-government demonstrations in parts of Europe.

In France, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators joined marches in Paris, Lyon and other cities, demanding greater investment in education, affordable housing and relief from rising household expenses. While most rallies remained peaceful, tensions flared in parts of Paris as protesters clashed with security forces near the conclusion of the main march.

French authorities deployed around 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide to maintain order. The Interior Ministry said at least 290 people were arrested during the demonstrations.

Germany witnessed similar scenes as tens of thousands gathered in major cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich, calling for improvements in education infrastructure and measures to ease the burden of rising living costs.

In Frankfurt, a small group of masked protesters reportedly vandalised and looted several shops, prompting police action. Authorities said about 60 people were arrested on charges ranging from property damage to assault.

The demonstrations were organised by campaign groups and student networks that have increasingly emerged as influential voices in debates over economic inequality, social welfare and access to public services.

In Serbia, youth activism has become a significant political force, with student-led mobilisation playing a prominent role in recent electoral changes that ended the dominance of the country’s long-standing leadership.

Similar demonstrations and solidarity actions were also reported in Portugal.

Analysts say the protests reflect deeper anxieties among younger Europeans over housing affordability, educational opportunities, wage growth and the future of public services.

Despite Europe’s relatively high standards of living, many young people argue that economic pressures and weakened social support systems are making it increasingly difficult to build stable futures.

The latest demonstrations suggest that concerns over the cost of living are evolving into a broader political challenge for governments across Europe, with younger generations demanding not only economic relief but also long-term reforms aimed at improving public services and social mobility.
