Uzbekistan has agreed to continue supplying uranium for India’s nuclear power plants, a decision announced following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent on Sunday, 30 August 2026.
Concluding his two‑day state visit, Prime Minister Modi and President Mirziyoyev elevated bilateral ties to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
A total of 11 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed across diverse sectors, including mining, Ayurveda, tourism, economic and financial dialogue, higher education, environment, and strategic cooperation. The two sides also set a target of USD 5 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, five times the current volume.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi was conferred Uzbekistan’s highest honour for foreign leaders — the “Oliy Darajali Do’stlik” Order — in recognition of his efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two nations.
Another key outcome was the planned rollout of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Uzbekistan, a move expected to benefit thousands of Indian students pursuing medical and science studies there.
President Mirziyoyev is scheduled to visit New Delhi in the coming weeks for the BRICS Summit, while Prime Minister Modi has now arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
