An Indian cargo vessel has been sunk in an attack allegedly carried out by Iran backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.

When reports came-in late on Tuesday night, all 13 Indians on board merchant ship MSV Noore Oliya have been rescued. One Yemeni national also escaped to safety.

The Indian cargo vessel was hit by a projectile allegedly fired by Houthi rebels about 13 nautical miles south of Al Hudaydah in the Red Sea.

One media report suggested that ill-fated cargo vessel was apparently struck by a remotely controlled small boat that was packed with explosives.

A strongly worded statement issued by the Ministry of External Affaiors (MEA) stated that “we condemn the attack on the Indian flagged commercial vessel, MSV Faize Noore Oliya that sank in the Red Sea, off the coast of Yemen on August 4, 2026. All 13 Indian nationals have been rescued. Our Embassy in Riyadh is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with the Yemeni authorities for the safety and security of the crew. We thank the Yemeni authorities for their support.

“The continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region are deeply worrisome. The targeting of commercial shipping in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region, in keeping with international law, must be restored at the earliest”, the MEA statement said.

Soon after the explosions on the vessel, it capsized and sank in the Red Sea waters. Yemini authorities which responded to the SOS were very quick to reach the location rescuing all 14 seafarers that included 13 Indians.
