The fourth round of negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada has begun in the National Capital.
The five‑day talks, running from 14–18 September 2026, aim to advance discussions on key areas such as trade in goods and services, rules of origin, and technical barriers to trade. Both sides have set an ambitious target of raising bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030.
Bilateral trade between the two countries fell 8.22% in 2025–26, declining to USD 7.95 billion from USD 8.66 billion in 2024–25. India’s major exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronics, and chemicals, while imports are dominated by pulses, pearls and semi‑precious stones, coal, fertilisers, paper, and crude oil. In services, India’s key exports are telecommunications, computer and information services, and other business services.
Beyond trade, Canada hosts a vibrant Indian diaspora, including more than 425,000 Indian students and a large Indian‑origin community. The previous round of CEPA negotiations was held in Ottawa in July 2026.
