Two major questions that have become headaches for the elected governments – how to stop terrorists receiving funds over the internet and how to prevent them usage of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) as weapons  – will be deliberated in depth this weekend in Delhi and Mumbai during meeting of United Nation’s Counter Terrorism Committee.

India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ms Ruchira Khamboj, also the chairperson of UN’s CTC informed media persons on Wednesday the 26th of October 2022 that terrorism remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security and misuse of emerging technologies was an issue of increasing concern.

While addressing media on Wednesday Ms Khamboj said over the past two decades, member states (of the United Nations) have made tangible progress in countering terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism yet terrorist threat persists and “despite our best efforts has evolved”
“Terrorism remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. With the growing prevalence of technology and rapid rise in digitisation, addressing the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorists purposes has become an issue of increasing concern,” she said.

On Friday the 28th of October 2022, the two day UN-CTC meeting will begin in Mumbai where many surviving victims of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and 2016 Brussels bombing incident are expected to interact with the UN delegates.

A solemn ceremony is also planned to pay tributes at the memorial of 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.

On  Saturday the 29th of October 2022 the counter terrorism committee will move to Delhi where many foreign ministers are expected to hold discussions.

This all important UN’s CTC is being held outside New York UN’s headquarters after a gap of seven years. In 2015 it was held in the Spanish capital city Madrid.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, his counterpart from Gabon, Shirley Ayorkar Botchwey, and Foreign Minister of Ghana Reem Ebrahim Al Hashimy are expected to take part.

Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs said the meeting’s overarching theme is ‘countering the use of new technologies for terrorists purposes’.

David Scharia, Head of Branch, UN The Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate also addressed the press conference.
India is currently the Chair of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee.
