It was a black Sunday for the house of Shapoorji Pallonji Group as their scion Cyrus Mistry died in a horrific car crash on Ahmadabad-Mumbai highway on Sunday the 4th of September, 2022.

According to various media reports and agencies the driver of the car in which Cyrus Mistry was travelling allegedly lost control due to over speeding and rammed into the divider.

Police said there were four people including a woman in the car.

Two people died on the spot, including Mistry, while the other two were shifted to hospital.

Apart from Mistry, another deceased has been identified as Jahangir Dinsha Pandole. The injured Anayata Pandole and Darius Pandole are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Around 3 pm, the car met with an accident as it crashed into a divider on the bridge above Surya River while travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. Four people were inside, out of them two people died on the spot and the rest two were shifted to a hospital,” said Palghar Superintendant of Police Balasaheb Patil.

Cyrus Mistry, who burst onto India’s business stage big time with his appointment as the chairman of Tata Sons in 2012 before a boardroom feud forced his exit.

According to PTI, Mistry, an Irish citizen and scion of the real estate behemoth Shapoorji Pallonji Group, who was already heading family-owned companies when he was appointed to succeed Ratan Tata as the head of the over USD 100 billion Tata Group, was on his way from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when the tragedy occurred around 3:15 PM on the bridge on the Surya river at Charoti Naka, 120 km away from Mumbai.

According to initial information, the Mercedes Benz car, with Anahita Pandole at the wheel, was over speeding and tried to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side, a police official reportedly told a PTI reporter (and as quoted in their website).

A woman was driving the car and tried to overtake another vehicle from left side, but lost control and crashed into the road divider, an eyewitness said, corroborating the official about the possible reason for the accident.

Mistry and Jahangir were on the rear seats, the official said.

On the sudden and tragic demise of Cyrus Mistry, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it a “big loss to the world of commerce and industry”.

“The untimely demise of Shri Cyrus Mistry is shocking. He was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess,” Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet while offering condolences to his family and friends.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, the second person outside the Tata family to occupy the top position in the group, condoled the death of Mistry, a man who, he said, had a passion for life.

“I am deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely demise of Mr Cyrus Mistry. He had a passion for life and it is really tragic that he passed away at such a young age,” Chandrasekaran said in a statement.
