On Sunday the 8th of My 2022 it was a solemn occasion to mark the 50th anniversary of Sikkim becoming part of India.
Many prominent personalities of the state had gathered at the MG Road in Gangtok to take part in a programme organised by Sikkim Nagarik Samaj recalling events dated back to 1973.
On 8th of May 1973 a Tripartite Agreement was signed paving way for a complete merger of Sikkim with the Republic of India.
The agreement was sealed between the representative of the Government of India, the then Chogyal of Sikkim and three political parties of the erstwhile kingdom of Sikkim.
Constitutional formalities to merge Sikkim with India and becoming the 22nd state were completed on May 16, 1975 after a gap of two years of signing the agreement.
