US President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new punitive measures against Iran, which strategic experts are categorising as the next phase of “economic warfare” against Washington’s West Asian adversary.
In a post on his Truth Social app, the President said Iran had been given several opportunities to reach a deal with the United States but failed to do so. He vowed to launch an unprecedented campaign of economic warfare designed to push Tehran into isolation.
Trump also threatened economic punishment for any nation siding with Tehran, warning that such countries would face “tremendous economic consequences.”
The measures are expected to target Iran’s key economic lifelines, including oil‑smuggling networks, financial transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies.
Calling the new measures an “economic D‑Day,” Trump urged U.S. allies to join Washington in isolating Iran, stressing that the campaign is aimed at weakening Tehran’s ability to finance and support activities abroad. He reiterated that Iran will “never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.”
The announcement came amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil shipments. Trump claimed the waterway remains open and said the U.S. naval blockade has been “highly effective.”
His comments followed earlier indications that negotiations with Iran had been paused. Trump said talks could resume in the future but insisted Tehran must first be ready to make a deal.
Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf declared that Iran would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the United States fulfills its commitments under a 14‑point memorandum. These conditions include lifting the blockade, releasing frozen Iranian assets, and easing sanctions on Iran.
