The BBC and other media outlets were reporting on Sunday the 29th of May 2022 that French and German leaders have urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold “direct and serious negotiations” with Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky.
Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz spoke to Putin on phone and urged him to start talks with his Ukrainian counterpart.
The German Chancellor’s office said that both the leaders “insisted on an immediate ceasefire and a withdrawal of Russian troops”.
Putin on the other hand has said that he was open to resuming dialogue with Kyiv, without specifying whether he intended to hold direct talks with Volodymyr Zelensky or via an envoy.
The Ukrainian president had earlier said he was not “eager” for talks, but added they would likely be necessary to end the conflict.
It may be recalled that Russian and Ukrainian have held number of rounds of talks ever since Russia invaded on 24 February.
