The 109th Tibetan Independence Day was celebrated on Sunday the 13th February 2022 in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
Marked by Tibetans living in exile in India and in particularly in Dharamshala where Tibetan Government in Exile is headquartered, the day is very special in Tibetan history ever since the 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibetan Independence by Proclamation of Independence on 13th February 1913.
On that day in Shimla, Tibet negotiated an agreement for independence from the British rule in presence of representatives from the then Chinese government.
However, as the history goes, in March 1959, China occupied Tibet by force. The present Dalai Lama escaped to India cheating death at the hands of advancing Chinese PLA and was given political asylum along with his followers.
Though Dalai Lama escaped to India via Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, his safe abode ever since has been at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, where the Tibetans living in exile have formed their own ‘government’ with their very own elected ‘prime minister’ through ballot.
