Months after his three sons were killed in an air raid in Gaza, the Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were assassinated in Tehran, the Iranian capital on Wednesday the 31st of July 2024.
Ismail Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the official function of inauguration of new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian.
He was allegedly killed after mid-night local time.
The political head of Hamas was based in Qatar where he had been holding cease fire negotiations with Israel.
The Islamic Hamas movement confirmed the death of its leader, saying Haniyeh was assassinated by an Israeli attack in Iran.
In a press statement, Hamas said that it “mourns to the Palestinian people, the Arab and Islamic nation, and the free people of the world,” after their leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli raid on his residence in Tehran.
A source close to Hamas was quoted by Xinhua news agency that – Ismail Haniyeh was also expected to discuss with the Iranian president the political and field developments related to the Palestine-Isreal conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli’s IDF refused to comment on the incident stating that ‘they do not express their views on any news appearing in foreign media’.
Ever since Hams had attacked Israel on 7th of October 2023 after capturing many hostages, Israel had bombed all parts of Gaza in an attempt to flush-out Hamas militants.
According to Gaza health authorities, the Israeli offensive has led to the killing of over 38,000 Palestinians in the Gaza enclave, while the UN estimated that nearly 2 million people there have been displaced till date.
