The good old MCD of Delhi is formally reborn

 The old and time-tested model of local self-government for the Capital was re-booted on Sunday the 22^nd of May 2022 when the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) formally came to life with two senior IAS officers taking charge.

IAS officers Ashwani Kumar and Gyanesh Bharti assumed charge as the new civic body’s special officer and commissioner, respectively.

The MCD was trifurcated in 2012 into three different civic bodies namely the North, South and East municipal corporations.

During the recently concluded Budget session of the Parliament, all three civic bodies were abolished and unified MCD was recreated through the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022.

A bill to unify the three civic bodies was first approved by the Lok Sabha on March 30^th 2022 and thereafter by the Rajya Sabha on April 5^th 2022.

The bill became an Act after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to it on 18^th of April, 2022.

Under the new civic body the number of municipal wards have been reduced from 272 to 250.

This means delimitation of MCD wards which according to sources is likely to begin in the near future.
