Much before the formal announcement of allocation of portfolios of the Union Cabinet, it was well known that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not going to disturb the top for ministers namely Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar.
All these four ministers were part of the Cabinet Committee on Security – popularly known as the CCS ministers. And their portfolios are Home, Defence, Finance and External Affairs.
Modi himself will keep all the sensitive departments and will personally clear files belonging to Department of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the Department of Atomic Energy and the Department of Space.
Apart from the CCS ministers other prominent ministers who have retained their departments are Nitin Gadkari (Surface Transport), Piyush Goyal (Commerce), Ashwini Vaishnaw (Railways), Sarbananda Sonowal (Ports, Shipping and Waterways), Bhupendra Yadav (Environment, Forest and Climate Change) and Virendra Kumar (Social Justice and Empowerment).
