India’s second nuclear powered Arihant-Class submarine ‘INS Arighaat’ was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Thursday the August 29th 2024 at Visakhapatnam.
Launched in July 2009, and now commissioned INS Arighaat a crucial force multiplier in India’s concept of blue water navy in the region.
On Thursday the defence minister Rajnath Singh had specially flew to the location for commissioning of INS Arighaat.
In his address he exuded confidence that ‘Arighaat’ will further strengthen India’s nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence, help in establishing strategic balance & peace in the region, and play a decisive role in the security of the country.
He commended the Indian Navy, DRDO & the Industry for their hard work and synergy in achieving this capability. He termed this self-reliance as the foundation of self power.
The construction of INS Arighaat involved the use of advanced design and manufacturing technology, detailed research & development, utilisation of special materials, complex engineering and highly skilled workmanship.
INS Arighaat is actually an upgraded version of the Arihnat-class submarine
It is India’s second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine under the Advance Technology Vessel (ATV) project to build nuclear submarines at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam and is code named as S3.
The submarine will have one seven-blade propeller powered by a pressurised water reactor and is reported to achieve a max speed of 24 knots (44 km/h) in submerged condition.
