J&K government on Monday the 23rd of May 2022 ordered to replace ‘Sher-i-Kashmir’ Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah embossed on Police medal for gallantry and meritorious service with the national emblem.
The order was issued over two years after the government changed the name of ‘Sher-i-Kashmir’ Police Medal to J&K Police Medal.
News agencies are reporting that the order to replace Sheikh Abdullah’s picture embossed on the medal with the national emblem was issued by J&K’s Principal Secretary, Home Department R K Goyal.
Sher-i-Kashmir is a reference to National Conference founder Sheikh Abdullah, who is the father of NC Chief and Member Parliament Farooq Abdullah and grandfather of Omar Abdullah.
“It is hereby ordered that in modification to the Para 4 of the Jammu & Kashmir Police Medal Scheme, the Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah embossed on one side of the medal shall be replaced with “The National Emblem of Government of India” and the other side inscribed with the J&K State Emblem shall be inscribed as “Jammu and Kashmir Police Medal for Gallantry” and “Jammu and Kashmir Police Medal for Meritorious Service’ in case of Gallantry/Meritorious Medal, as the case may be,” reads an order issued by Principal Secretary, Home.
In January 2020, the J&K had changed the nomenclature of police medal for gallantry and police medal for meritorious service by removing the word ‘Sher-i-Kashmir’.
