Nine persons including officials of Oreva, the company that renovated the bridge, ticket sellers and security men have been arrested for the Morbi bridge horror accident when the recently renovated suspension bridge collapsed.
Giving this information during the a presser, the IG of Rajkot police range Ashok Yadav said that they have “arrested nine people after filing FIR under various sections of IPC. The arrested includes the managers of Oreva company and ticket clerks.”
He added that “when we get evidence, police will nab the accused further. We have also formed a Special Investigation team pertaining to the incident.”
The death toll has now climbed to 135. About 100 people were injured due to the collapse of the suspension bridge over the Morbi Macchu river on Sunday the 29th of October 2022.
The Gujarat Police has filed a First Information Report under IPC sections 304 and 308 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) in the bridge collapse.
It was also announced that state government has constituted a five-member committee to probe the horrific incident.
The prime minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Morbi on Tuesday the First of November 2022.
Prime Minister Modi, who is in Kevadia said that rescue operations were underway and there would be no laxity in rescue and relief efforts.
“The Gujarat Government has been carrying out relief and rescue operations since yesterday. Centre too is extending all help to the State Government,” PM Modi said.
In New Delhi several foreign envoys expressed their deep condolences to India on the loss of precious lives in the tragic incident of the bridge collapse in Morbi, Gujarat.
Among the ambassadors who issued condolences included Denis Alipov, the Russian Ambassador to India; Emmanuel Lenain, the Ambassador of France to India and Cameron MacKay, the High Commissioner for Canada in India,.
The Russian ambassador in a tweet stated “nn awful tragedy happened yesterday in Morbi! Profound condolences to the relatives of those many perished, to Prime Minister Modi and all the people of India and Gujarat! Speedy recovery to the injured!”
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his condolences on the Morbi tragedy in Gujarat to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Please accept our most sincere condolences on the tragic consequences of the bridge collapse in the state of Gujarat,” read Putin’s statement.
Meanwhile, US Embassy in India also extended its heartfelt condolences to the victims and families of this terrible tragedy.
“The US Mission in India is deeply saddened by news of the collapse of a suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat. Our condolences go out to the victims and families of this terrible tragedy,” tweeted the US Embassy.
France too expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives following the tragic incident of #MorbiBridge collapse in #Gujarat. France expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims & wishes the injured a speedy recovery,” tweeted Lenain.
MacKay also tweeted his condolences. “Our hearts are breaking for Gujarat,” said MacKay.
