Muhammad Yunus is a Nobel Peace Prize winner in the year 2006 and is currently the chief adviser of the Interim Government in Bangladesh who is understood to be holding an equivalent rank of a executive head of a government.

In that capacity he spoke to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On Friday the 16th of August 2024, the Prime Minister received a phone call from Mr Muhammad Yunus.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that both leaders exchanged views on the prevailing situation.

Modi reaffirmed India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive Bangladesh.

He also emphasised India’s commitment to supporting the people of Bangladesh through various development initiatives.

Apart from regular exchange of communication, Narendra Modi underlined the importance of ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Yunus assured that the Interim Government would prioritise protection, safety and security of Hindus and all minority groups in Bangladesh, the MEA statement added.

The two leaders also discussed ways to take the bilateral relationship forward in line with the respective national priorities.

Later, addressing a weekly press conference in the National Capital, the MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are talking to them in the interest of both countries, we want the journey of peace, security and development should continue in Bangladesh. As far as the situation of minorities is concerned, we are constantly monitoring it. India’s High Commissioner in Dhaka has met the Foreign Affairs Advisor in the interim government and discussed bilateral issues as well as the security of Hindus”.

Jaiswal further added that India believes early restoration of normalcy in Bangladesh where all minorities are safe including Hindus.

“We also believe that it is the responsibility of every government to protect its citizens”, the MEA spokesperson added.

Jaiswal said that owing to the current situation in Bangladesh, visa services are running in a limited manner and he hoped that it will improve in the coming days.
