Within hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine President Zelensky, India at the United Nations Security Council voiced its concerned that despite of repeated attempts about 300 to 500 of its students are still trapped in Sumy, Ukraine, near the Russian border.
The underlining concern of prime minister’s call to Putin and Zelensky was to immediately provide a safe passage to the Indian nationals majority of whom are students still held-up in Sumy.
Efforts are still continuing at the highest level, according to Minister of External Affairs officials to evacuate hold-up Indian students in Sumy.
On Tuesday the 8th of March 2022 another attempt will be made during the local day-time for a trouble free passage.
The problem is the first five kilometres of the journey that students have to make without being harmed as the area is witnessing aggressive street fighting among warring factions in Sumy.
Sumy in Ukraine is just 20-25 kms from the Russian border.
Soon after the prime minister had made his call to the Ukrainian leader, a MEA press release stated – “Prime Minister Modi suggested that a direct conversation between President Putin and President Zelensky may greatly assist the on going peace efforts”.
Ever since the fighting erupted between Russia and Ukraine, about 17,100 Indian nationals have been brought back to India in the last 11 days.
83 flights were operated during this period under ‘Operation Ganga’ to airlift the stranded Indian nationals from war torn Ukraine.
