Justice DY Chandrachud is all set to become the next Chief Justice of India after the present CJI Justice UU Lalit retires on 8th of November next month.

Justice Chaudrachud is son of former CJI YV Chandrachud. This would be the first when both father and son had become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India.

Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor and as 50th CJI.

As Justice Lalit is retiring on November 8th, the next senior-most judge Justice Chandrachud will take oath on November 9th and demit the office on November 10, 2024.

The Union Law Ministry had on October 7, written a letter to Lalit requesting him to recommend his successor. Justice Chandrachud completed his LLB (Bachelor in Law, Degree) from Delhi University.

He studied at Harvard University after receiving the prestigious Inlaks Scholarship. At Harvard, he completed his Masters in Law (LLM) and Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD).

Chandrachud practised as an advocate in the Supreme Court, besides the High Courts of Gujarat, Calcutta, Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi before becoming a judge of the Bombay High Court.
