EAM Jaishankar lived up to his reputation of plain speaking without fear or favour particularly when the stage is the annual General Assembly meeting of the United Nations in New York.

On Tuesday the 26th of September 2023, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar addressed the 78th  UNGA and made two significant points.

Firstly without naming Canada and its support to terrorists involved in Khalistan agitation, Jaishankar said “…respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs cannot be exercises in cherry picking.

“when reality departs from rhetoric, we must have the courage to call it out’’, EAM added.

Here is the full text of his speech:

The second most important issue that Dr Jaishankar highlighted in his speech of the long delayed reforms that United Nations needs to address at the earliest.

The news agency ANI reported that EAM said : the United Nations should make reforms to stay relevant in the modern world and the issue cannot remain “indefinite” and “unchallenged”.
EAM took a jibe at some nations and said, “In our deliberations, we often advocate promotion of a rules-based order.

From time to time, respect for the UN Charter is also involved. But for all the talk, it is still a few nations which shape the agenda and seek to define the norms. This can’t go on indefinitely nor will it go unchallenged.

aA fair, equitable and democratic order will surely emerge once we all put our minds to it. And for a start, that means ensuring that rule-makers do not subjugate rule-takers.”
