India has reiterated parity of diplomatic presence with Canada given the nasty stand-off that had started with Canadian prime minister’s statement alleging Indian hand behind the killing of a Khalistani terrorist.

Spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi stated that –  “Given the much higher presence of diplomats or diplomatic presence here…and their continued interference in our internal matters, we have sought parity in our respective diplomatic presence. Discussions are ongoing on the modalities of achieving this”.

Bagchi while speaking to media during his weekly presser on Thursday evening on 5th of October 2023 said “Canadian diplomatic presence is higher (in India), we would assume that there would be a reduction”.
On a direct question that was asked about the reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats that could lead to decrease in the number of visas issued by the Canadian High Commission in India, Bagchi said, “It’s up to the Canadian side, who they choose to staff the High Commission with…our concerns are related to ensuring parity in diplomatic presence”.

Various media reports have suggested that India has asked for repatriation of 41 Canadian diplomats from India before 10th of October or else their diplomatic immunity will be stripped-off if they stay beyond this deadline.
