In the aftermath of destruction due to typhoon Yagi in the south and eastern Asia region, India has commenced humanitarian aid to Myanmar, Vietnam and Lao.
To Myanmar, the Indian Navy has commenced rapid preparations to deploy Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations in response to the devastating flash floods in that country.
Several regions across the country have been severely impacted by Typhoon Yagi, originating from the South China Sea.
A general release issued by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated that Eastern Naval Command in co-cordination with Eastern Fleet and other supporting units – Base Victualling Yard (BVY), Material Organisation and INHS Kalyani have successfully completed the overnight loading of HADR pallets including HADR gears, drinking water, victualling rations and medicines etc., onto Indian naval ships destined from Visakhapatnam for HADR operations in Yangon.
This rapid mobilisation comes despite the short notice, showcasing the Navy’s ability to swiftly respond to humanitarian crises in the region
In a separate statement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India has launched Operation Sadbhav to provide humanitarian assistance to the Government of Vietnam to provide relief to the affected communities in northern Vietnam impacted by the natural disaster.
A consignment of 35 tons of humanitarian assistance, including water purification items, water containers, blankets, kitchen utensils, and solar lanterns, among others, was airlifted to Vietnam today by a special aircraft.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had conveyed sympathies and solidarity to the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh immediately after the typhoon struck Vietnam.
With regards to Lao PDR, India extended emergency humanitarian assistance in the wake of the floods caused by Typhoon Yagi.
The floods and landslides have caused widespread damage to property and agricultural land affecting around 40,000 people in northern Laos.
Ten tonnes of humanitarian relief supply has been sent to the Government of Lao PDR.
The supply in the form of hygiene kits, blankets, mosquito nets and repellents, sleeping bags, gensets, water purifiers, water purification tablets and disinfectants and other material has been airlifted today on-board a special aircraft from India.
India has been among the first responders in providing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) to the region.
Operation Sadbhav is part of India’s broader effort to contribute to HADR within the ASEAN region, in line with its longstanding ‘Act East Policy’.
