For tech giant Google getting a severe drubbing down second time within a week by India’s anti-trust regulator is bound to give a number of sleepless nights for its top bosses.
On Tuesday the 25th of October 2022, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed a whopping penalty of Rs 936.44 crores on Google for abusing its dominant position with respect to its Play Store policies apart from issuing a cease-and-desist order.
The regulator has also directed the company to stay away from unfair business practices as well as carry out various measures to address the anti-competitive issues within a defined timeline, according to an order.
On October 20, the watchdog imposed a penalty of Rs 1,337.76 crore on the company for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in relation to Android mobile devices and ordered the internet major to cease and desist from various unfair business practices.
News agencies ANI and PTI are reporting that Competition Commission of India has asked Google to allow, and not restrict app developers from using any third-party billing or payment processing services, either for in-app purchases or for purchasing apps.
The tech behemoth was fined after the CCI found it to be dominant in the markets for licensable OS for smart mobile devices & market for app stores for Android smart mobile OS, in India.
The CCI order was delivered after the US based Match Group Inc had red flagged various alleged violations by Google for following unfair business practices.
The Match Group had hired India’s top advocates and experts in anti-trust laws from one of the best law firms in the country , Talwar,Thakore & Associates (TTA), to fight their case.
It is worthwhile to mention that the brilliant team of young attorneys who represented Match included among others, Sr. Advocate Jayant Mehta with Sonam Mathur, Dinoo Muthappa and Dhruv Dikshit.
