On the eve of 78th Independence Day, Gallantry Awards were announced on Wednesday the 14th of August 2024.
According to a release issued by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) President Droupadi Murmu has approved 103 Gallantry awards to Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces personnel on the eve of Independence Day 2024.
These are: four Kirti Chakras including three posthumous; 18 Shaurya Chakras including four posthumous; one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry); 63 Sena Medals (Gallantry) including two posthumous; 11 Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry); and six Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).
The gallantry medals as announced by the MHA includes one President’s Medal and Gallantry Medals for 1037 personnel of Police, Fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence (HG&CD) and Correctional Services on the occasion of 78th Independence day.
With regard to MoD list, the President has also approved 39 Mention-in-Despatches, including to Army Dog Kent (posthumous) for their significant contributions in different military operations.
The operations include Operation Rakshak, Operation Snow Leopard, Operation Sahayata, Operation Hifazat, Operation Orchid and Operation Katchal.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in a statement said that the awards include one President’s Medal for Gallantry, 213 personnel to get Medals for Gallantry (GM), 94 police personnel to be awarded the President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 729 will be awarded the Medal for Meritorious Services.
The President’s Medal for Gallantry has been awarded to Chaduvu Yadaiah, Head Constable of Telangana Police who showed rare gallantry and apprehended two notorious robbers — Ishan Niranjan Neelamnalli and Rahul — despite being severely injured. He managed to get hold of the criminals that resulted in their apprehension. He was hospitalized for 17 days.
Out of 213 Medal for Gallantry (GM), 208 have been awarded to Police Personnel i.e 31 personnel from J&K Police, 17 personnel each from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, 15 personnel from Chhattisgarh, 12 from Madhya Pradesh, seven personnel each from Jharkhand, Punjab and Telangana, 52 from CRPF, 14 from SSB, 10 from CISF, six personnel from BSF and the remaining police personnel from the other States and Union Territories and CAPFs.
Besides, three GM and one GM have been awarded to Delhi and Jharkhand Fire Service personnel respectively and one GM has been awarded to Uttar Pradesh HG&CD personnel.
Out of 94 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), 75 have been awarded to police service, eight to Fire Service, eight to Civil Defence & Home Guard Service and three to Correctional Service.
Moreover, out of 729 Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM), 624 have been awarded to Police Service, 47 to Fire Service, 47 to Civil Defence & Home Guard Service and 11 to Correctional Service, the statement said.
