ECI announces schedule for President’s polls

Elections to elect the next president of India will be held on July 18, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said on Thursday, the 9th of June 2022.
The notification for the election will be issued on June 15, and the last day for nomination is June 29. The date for scrutiny of nomination is June 30, and last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 2.
The polls will be held on July 18, and counting will be done on July 21.
The nomination papers for the Presidential election will have to be submitted in Delhi; there will have to be 50 proposers and 50 seconders, who will be from the electoral college.
While MPs will vote in the Parliament, MLAs will vote in their respective assemblies. For those who want to vote from a different location, an application will have to be submitted to the Election Commission for change of the place to vote.
As of now, there are 776 MPs, and 4,033 MLAs who will be voting top elect the next president. The total value of the votes of MPs is 5,43,200, and that of the state MLAs are 5,43,231, the Election Commission said. He said the numbers will change after the Rajya Sabha polls, and other polls that may come in between.
CEC Rajiv Kumar also said political parties cannot issue a whip to their legislators for voting in the election. The voting will be through a secret ballot.
Kumar also said Covid protocols will be followed as applicable, and said directions have been given to ensure the election is carried out in an eco-friendly manner with zero use of plastic.
