New Delhi has received an unsigned extradition request in form of Note Verbale from Dhaka asking for return of Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.

“No comments”, is the formal response from Randhir Jaiswal, the Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has been living in India ever she fled Dhaka on 5th of August earlier this year following widespread students protests.

There now exists an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh.

On Monday the 23rd of December 2024, Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Advisor in Bangladesh’s interim government, said, “We have sent a note verbale (diplomatic message) to the Indian government saying that Bangladesh wants her back here for the judicial process”.

It may be recalled that Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civil officials for “crimes against humanity and genocide”.

Meanwhile situation in Bangladesh remains tense as Sheikh Hasina stating that no lawyer was available to defend recently arrested ISCKON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das.

The ousted Prime Minister further noted that this was enough proof that Bangla Desh now does not have any law and her country is being ruled by a fascist regime.
