President of Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav is set to become the new leader of opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
On Tuesday the 22nd of March 2022 he resigned as Lok Sabha MP and decided to retain his recently elected seat as MLA of Vidhan Sabha of Uttar Pradesh.
The Azamgarh MP, along with his uncle and party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and tendered his resignation.
Akhilesh was elected from the Karhal seat in Mainpuri district after a seven-phased polls that lasted a month.
His party MP, M. Azam Khan, who was elected as Rampur Sadar MLA, also resigned.
Azam Khan had contested the polls from jail.
