It is vitally important for anti-missile systems to do regular test in near battle conditions. To achieve perfection for such interceptor missiles, dummy targets or un-manned aerial vehicles are used for target shooting.
On Monday the 5th of February 2024, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that DRDO had conducted four successful tests between 30th of January and 2nd February of ABHYAS, the High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT).
According to a release issued by the MoD, these four tests of Abhyas took place from Chandipur-on-Sea test range in the Bay of Bengal area.
The high-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) – ABHYAS designed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) offers a realistic threat scenario for the practice of weapon systems and is designed for autonomous flying with the help of an auto pilot indigenously designed and developed by ADE.
The indigenous operation-friendly ABHYAS requires minimum logistics and is cost-effective compared to imported equivalents.
