Indian-Origin Jurist Navi Pillay Awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2026

South African jurist of Indian origin Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2026 in recognition of her lifelong contribution to the promotion of peace, human rights and international law.

A former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Pillay rose from the oppressive realities of apartheid-era South Africa to become one of the world’s most respected voices for justice and equality.

Born in Durban in 1941 to parents of Tamil Indian origin, Pillay built a distinguished legal career defending anti-apartheid activists and championing the rights of marginalized communities. She later became the first Black woman to serve as a judge of South Africa’s High Court.

Her international judicial career included serving as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, as well as a judge at the International Criminal Court.

From 2008 to 2014, she headed the UN human rights office as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, where she played a key role in advancing global human rights standards.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s highest honours, the Nobel Peace Prize recognizes individuals and organizations for outstanding efforts toward peace, human rights and international cooperation.

The 2026 award coincides with the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize.
