India is angry at the latest edition of finding published by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD).
The UN body has accused India of alleged “large-scale violations” by authorities against the members of the SC-ST community, the tribal people and “non-citizens,” in its latest release.
The Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Randhir Jaiswal stated that “ we have seen the press release issued by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination following India’s 11th periodic review under ICERD, held in Geneva on 11–12 August 2026.
“This was a routine treaty-body review, and India participated in the spirit of constructive engagement. As a country that played a leading role in negotiating and drafting ICERD in the 1960s, our commitment to combating racial discrimination remains unwavering.
“During the review, we highlighted India’s constitutional safeguards, robust legal framework, pluralism and sustained efforts to protect disadvantaged communities.
While we will respond to the Committee’s observations through the established procedure, the inter-Ministerial delegation, which was led by the Solicitor General of India, Tushar Mehta, had already rejected the sweeping generalizations, unsubstantiated allegations, or tendency to exceed the Convention’s mandate during the review meeting.
India rejects any politically motivated highly malicious references in the report with all the contempt that it deserves, Randhir Jaiswal added.
